We run a fortnightly book group for any keen North London readers aged 12+ eager to discuss and review the newest (and some of the oldest) books on offer.

The group provides a relaxed, informal and fun atmosphere in which to develop or consolidate a love of reading. As the weeks progress everyone is invited to compare and contrast the titles read and choose a favourite. The group offers young people a chance to share their love of reading and have a dialogue with others whose opinion’s may differ, in a friendly and enjoyable way.

Our Teen Book Group offers up a chance for older readers to delve into slightly more emotionally mature themes than our younger group, and to discuss and read more complex books while still keeping a fun and relaxed atmosphere.

What a jolly good idea

A friend recently asked my daughter about her book club. “And where do you hold it?”, he asked. “A bookshop,” replied my daughter. “What a damn jolly good idea!”, he enthused. And indeed it is: a calm, creative and bookish setting. I wondered why I hadn’t heard of more bookshop book clubs.

My 14 yo daughter attends every session she can (it’s held every fortnight) and enjoys catching up with her friends, generally likes the majority of the books they read (book club members take it in turns to choose the next book, v democratic) and the older teen who runs it is amiable and fun whilst also steering the discussion in in a thoughtful fashion. Some of the books they have read so far are:
Neal Shusterman: Scythe, Thunderhead
Adiba Jaigirdar: A Million To One, The Henna Wars
Ravena Guron: This Book Kills
Angharad Walker: Once Upon A Fever

It would be good if they might
occasionally be encouraged to choose a book from outside their usual comfort zone to expose them to authors and genres they wouldn’t normally seek out.

The kids are given complete control over their reading choices although they are directed towards the relevant (age-appropriate) section of the bookshop to guide them.

At the moment it is attended by a small group of 14y-o girls (and in the past, one boy) who happen to know each other. They are friendly and easy-going so newcomers needn’t feel put off by the prospect of joining the group — they will be welcomed warmly.
